During
this period of time, I contributed both the May and June covers of
American Turf Monthly, including creating the design on the
left highlighting the famous facade of Churchill Downs superimposed with
a view of last year's Kentucky Derby start. Deputy Minister lead the way
for eventual, Ky. Derby winner, Barbaro, pink saddle cloth, and #6 is
his stable mate, Showing Up, who ran 6th in the derby but also was the
eventual winner of the Arlington Secretariat Stakes and the Hollywood
Park Derby.
The image on the right is my 85th cover image on this magazine.
The
Grade II, Illinois Derby, held at Hawthorne Racecourse in early April,
was won by Cowtown Cat, who controlled
the race from start to finish and is seen here on the left the first time
running past the finish line. To see more images from Illinois Derby day

Cowtown Cat ran in the Kentucky Derby one month later and ran last in a field of 20.
